To celebrate the delights of home cooked food and inspirational home cooks in Ireland, Stanley ran a search for the Stanley Cook of the Year in April 2012.  Each month we selected a winning entry from people all over the country with ultimate winner being Siobhan Gainley from Mayo.

THE WINNER

Siobhan Gainley - August and Overall Winner

Siobhan -GainleySiobhan Gainley lives with her parents Nicholas and Ann and her three brothers on the family beef farmer near Snugboro, Co Mayo. She is 19 and in the second year of her Youth and Family course at St Angela's College. Siobhan loves cooking especially baking, which she learned from her beloved grandmother Josie who died a year ago. "I bought her a cookery book and the first dish she got me to make from it was a chocolate gateau, it worked and that's what got me started," says Siobhan. Her pork dish was one Siobhan developed herself and the judges couldn't fault her on either it's innovation, execution or presentation. She was complimented on her knife and cooking skills.

"For this dish, Siobhan had to get her timing bang on especially with so much to do and that's exactly what she did," said Mark Doe on behalf of the judges. The whole thing was brilliantly put together and that's what made her Stanley Cook of the Year 2012.

The Runners Up

Anne O'Loughlin - May Winner 'Hot Hands Apple Pie'

Annn -O-LoughlinAnne O'Loughlin comes from Newbridge Co Kildare where she is married to Edward who is an Ag advisor with Teagasc. They have four children: Sé (13), Eimear (11) Muireann (8) and Réiltín who is five. Anne describes herself as a very good home cook and she particularly enjoys baking. For her apple tart with a difference Anne always makes a sweet pastry. The judges loved Anne's sweet pastry saying they would all buy it in a restaurant and come back for more. The texture of Anne's pastry was excellent and her method of mixing the ingredients in a processor because of her warm hands really worked.

Sinead Quealy - September Winner 'Comeragh Lamb Pie'

Sinead -Quealy-Sinead Quealy comes from Kilmacthomas Co Waterford. She is married to dairy and beef farmer Patrick and they have a 14 month old daughter named Jo. As the name suggests the main ingredient in her dish was Comeragh lamb which was supplied by her brother-in-law Willie Drohan. Sinead loves cooking, preferring savoury over sweet dishes. "I like one-pot dishes where you can plan ahead and freeze." The judges complimented Sinead on her fluffy mashed potatoes, the tenderness of the lamb and the great flavours produced in her dish. A real family favourite.
